TREES DOWN HERETREES DOWN HEREBen Rivers, 2018 United Kingdom · USA · Hong Kong,
EXP, 00:13:56Shot in beautiful 16mm, Ben Rivers' “Trees Down Here” looks again at the relationship between nature and human constructions. In this case, the British filmmaker and artist specifically films the Churchill College, a graduate school which opened in the 1960's, and to which was added the Cowan Court building, designed by 6a architects. The bold and vibrant architecture of the buildings – old and new – also relates with the bountiful gardens, where the leafy trees reveal us the passage of time. In the same place, there are animals – owls, for example – looking at us defiantly. Rivers explores the conflict between architecture and nature, between humans and animals, and their fruitful relationships. A thoughtful and delicate essay on Churchill Colleg landscape and its obvious vanguardism. Ben Rivers is one of the most notable directors of experimental film, and his films have been repeatedly screened and awarded at Curtas Vila do Conde. (DR)
