MUSTERERKENNTNISPATTERN COGNITIONThorsten Fleisch, 2019 Germany,
ANI, 00:07:20In psychology and cognitive neuroscience, pattern cognition is the process by which humans and other animals produce knowledge through their memories, namely by recognizing patterns in seemingly random and disconnected sources of information. Filmed at 60 frames per second (unlike the traditional 24), this proposal by Thorsten Fleisch shows a hypnotic place (perhaps television?) that seduces the spectator through a mixture of ambiguous emotions, that both repel and fascinate. Also because of that, the film contains images whose viewing in a movie theatre can be dangerous for spectators with photosensitive epilepsy. If initially the images and sounds presented seem to create an effect of strangeness, the spectator gradually rehearses narrative meanings. “Pattern Cognition” marks the return of Thorsten Fleisch to Vila do Conde, where he already presented the experimental “Energie!” (2007).
