THE SIXTHE SIXXu An, Xi Chen, 2019 China,
ANI, 00:05:00The filmmakers Xi Chen and Xu An employ a device very similar to a zoetrope in their film “The Six”: animation, illusion of motion, circularity, 360º panning effect, repetition and difference. Main action takes place inside a rhomb shaped illuminated manuscript over a black backdrop; a bird and a piper sit on the two moons on either side of the painting. As the action takes place, the two moons gradually fill up in turns. Full moon, crescent moon, new moon and waning moon; the opposite happens on the other side. The narrative's slow pace gives “The Six” an hypnotic quality, which is enhanced by the fine black and white drawings that create an archetypically Chinese atmosphere. A woman, a man: she plays a wind instrument, then a string instrument, goes to bed and withdraws; he takes a flower from a jar, puts the same flower in the jar in the next scene, takes another flower... This is the Chinese duo debut in Curtas Vila do Conde.
