In the year of 1967, the California Peace Officers Association produced an educational film about sudden birth for its police corps, to spread basic knowledge in case of a birth. More than half a century later, in 2018, the director Scott Calonico tells us the story behind this film, by interviewing relatives of those involved, to understand how this exercise affected them. Interestingly, he manages to associate the heroic and theatrical performance of a policeman, who is, in fact, a doctor, and who brings Ann’s baby into the world, with Leonard Nimoy, the famous actor of “Star Trek”. “(...) Sudden Birth”’s low production budget and amateurism resulted in poor lighting and in an improvised cast of police officers and doctors, who made the scene of the real childbirth even more disconcerting. Scott Calonico, making his debut at Curtas Vila do Conde, creates a hilarious documentary about the impact of this little educational film in the lives of its participants. (IS)
