Through a hilarious monologue of acknowledgment to an alleged career prize, told in the style of stand-up comedy, Nicolas Chauvin, supposed officer of Napoleon's army and a fanatical patriot who gave rise to the term chauvinism (here brilliantly performed by Alexis Manetti), confronts the spectator with his radical French pride, military deeds and prejudices of all sorts. The result is an amusing satire to the right-wing nationalisms of our time and to all its derivations on both sides of the Atlantic ocean, from the most varied theories of conspiracy to fake news (the director has double nationality, French and American), reminding us that Chauvin’s contemporary counterparts are among the political forces that make the world go back to times of greater conservatism and authoritarianism. The cinematographic discourse is heterogeneous and, such as the character, brutal and impolite, where the comedy, sometimes remembering Monty Python, reveals itself as the only possible way. Benjamin Crotty already directed several short films (some in collaboration with the Portuguese Gabriel Abrantes) and the feature film “Fort Buchanan”. This is his debut at Curtas Vila do Conde.
