GULYABANIGULYABANIGürcan Keltek, 2018 Netherlands · Turkey,
DOC, 00:34:05In this film there is a voice over that functions as an anchor to the spectator, sharing in a first person account the experience of a seer in twentieth century Turkey. That voice’s sensuality endows the film with a poetic and cinematic tone, deflecting thus (without hiding it) the extreme violence of a narrative that addresses cultural and religious dogmas, power abuse, submission, loss of dignity and individuality. The images, beautiful but dissonant, do not follow the words, they amplify them and give the imagination the necessary room for what one hears to go deeper and shock any sensitive soul. How nice it would be to understand this ancestral language without the help of subtitles, that noisy visual layer that juxtaposes itself to a dazzling exercise on cinema, one which makes us read what one hears and that adds to the interpretation of the translator. Director Gurcan Keltek reconstructs and interprets Fethive Sessiz’s story through his journals and letters (both are originally from Izmir, Turkey). Awarded in Reykjavik and Montreal, Keltek’s “Gulyabani” is presented to us after his feature film “Meteorlar” won the grand prix at 2017’s edition of Porto/Post/Doc. (CA)
