RUBYRUBYMariana Gaivão, 2019 Portugal,
FIC, 00:25:38Ruby is fourteen years old. She was born in the United Kingdom, but grew up and lives in a rural region of the interior of Portugal, to where her parents moved. Millie is her best friend and will return to the United Kingdom in September. This may be the last summer they spend together. In an important stage of growth, full adolescence, when personalities are shaped by experiences, Ruby seems to fear the worst. “Ruby” is a story about searching (Ruby is looking for Will, then Millie, and finally her dog Frankie), but also about encounters and discoveries she does not seem to be prepared for, or willing to accept. “Where are you going?” is the first sentence uttered in the film, and the opening verses of New Rose, by The Damned, set the tone for “Ruby”, a fiction that suggests a conceptual device approaching the documentary (for example, the names of the characters correspond to the names of the main actresses). After “Sitiados” (2007), “Solo” (2012) and “First Light” (2014), this is the fourth presence of Mariana Gaivão in Curtas. (PC)
