RED HILLRED HILLLaura Carreira, 2018 United Kingdom,
FIC, 00:13:20Jim is a former miner who is now employed as a night-watchman. As the retirement date approaches, Jim stares reluctantly for the last few days of work, paralyzed by what to do next. His days are monotonous and in isolation, resulting from a solitary existence, mostly spent in silence, with the exception of the television’s sound in the background or a rare call from a former colleague. For someone who has little, and for whom work provides a purpose, how to deal with a sudden emptiness? This is a film of small daily gestures, a routine that the camera observes closely, empathically, determined not to abandon its protagonist. The scenes of his everyday life are interspersed by a sequence during a support group for people in a similar situation to Jim’s, but will he still be able to find some comfort? This is the debut of Laura Carreira in the Curtas’ National Competition. (JA)
