In the begining was the verb. While sowing a grain on the ground, a man and a woman argue about the possible gender identity of that grain, reproducing social and cultural stereotypes (“It is male...”) that are normalized in our contemporary societies. As he grows up, Oscar is subjected to various constraints, some more symbolic, others more explicit, and we follow the dilemmas of those who seek to build an identity while trying to respond to external expectations. “Purpleboy” is an animation that approaches, in a poetic and affective way, a complex cultural reality, and increasingly fracturing in several more conservative societies. This is Alexandre Siqueira’s absolute debut in Curtas Vila do Conde, but “Purpleboy” has already in its curriculum the important MIFA Pitching Art Prize at the prestigious Festival international du film d’animation d’Annecy, the most important regarding animation cinema.
