In October 2003, Portugal was the headline of Time magazine. The subject was surprising: the “Mothers of Bragança” demanded, in manifesto, that the wave of brothels and Brazilian prostitutes that “made the head” of their husbands was contained. The uproar was enormous and the police got to close several of those houses and deport several people. It was a burning issue in the Portuguese society for a few weeks. Sixteen years later, the story is fictionalized on television, in the series “Luz Vermelha”, directed by André Santos and Marco Leão. The first two episodes will be shown at Curtas 2019, in a preview that highlights the series format in our audiovisual panorama. It is also the debut of the pair André Santos and Marco Leão outside short films, in which they have a long and winning career. They have already been at this festival with “Cavalos Selvagens”, “Infinito”, “Má Raça” and “Pedro”. In the series format, closer to the television format, the duo continues to show their versatility, giving a personal imprint to this “Luz Vermelha”, highlighting the complexity of their characters, their contradictions and the possible lives they lead – whether they are journalists, politicians, “mothers”, or prostitutes.
