KIEVSKIY FRESKIYKIEVSKIY FRESKIYSergei Parajanov, 1966 Armenia,
EXP, 00:15:00“Kievskiy Freskiy” (1966) brought together the remnants from a feature film project aborted by the Ukraine’s Dovjenko Studios, which had produced Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors. Having written several drafts of the screenplay, Parajanov ventured to film the story of a family displaced by World War II, using stylised and austere images. Perhaps the project’s most interesting aspect concerns how the filmmaker used his usual poetic and liturgical style to recount a contemporary story rather than a story based on folklore. This edited version of rehearsals and tests recorded during the pre-production phase, which lasted approximately one year, was prepared in the 1980s by the Khanzhonkov Studios in Russia, founded in 1907.
