Todd Solondz’s latest film focuses again on a set of characters looking for their place in the world: a kid recovering from a cancer, an assistant at a veterinary clinic, a screenwriter in a decadent phase and a bitter woman. All of them will share, at different moments of life, a dachshund (in other words, a sausage dog). The dog’s serenity will contrast with the characters’ immense solitude and their difficulties in dealing with their problems. The set of short stories that “Uma Vida de Cão” includes shows again the best of Solondz’s caustic irony. As particular note, Danny DeVito’s performance as a script writing teacher in a film school, in a hilarious school metaphor in the new neoliberal era deserves special mention. (DR)
