Bohren & der Club of Gore and Miaux at 31st Curtas

Tickets here

The 31st edition of Curtas announces the first confirmations for STEREO: Bohren & der Club of Gore and Miaux play for the movies 'Le Révélateur' and 'Carnival of Souls'. Tickets are already on sale.

Meeting point par excellence, STEREO compiles, in each edition of Curtas, a set of proposals that, through the junction of music and cinema, intend to broaden the horizons of the seventh art. The 31st edition of Curtas announces its first confirmations: on the 13th of July, Vila do Conde Municipal Theatre receives Bohren & der Club of Gore for an original show that will put to music the seminal 'Le Révélateur', by Philippe Garrel. The next day, in the same venue, the stage is taken by the Belgian Miaux, with the film 'Carnival of Souls', by Herk Harvey.

With a career of almost 30 years, the music of The Bohren & der Club of Gore has an unequalled capacity to slow down time. A space that seems almost anachronistic – in a century made at the speed of clicks – where each piece moves at its own pace, meditating between the universes of jazz, doom and classical music. It can be said that it is especially cinematographic (some media perceive the soundscapes of Italian cinematographic classics), that it has an experimentalist soul coordinating the minimal and precise instrumentation. In this visit to Vila do Conde, they propose a revisit to the classic of the European experimental cinema, Le Révélateur. Philippe Garrel's greatest (and controversial) work, was filmed a few days after the student revolt of May 68 in Germany and in the vicinity of several concentration camps. In 'Le Révélateur', two young parents and their son move through the darkness, from space to space, in a bleak and mysterious reality. Bathed in a dark symbolism, the film constantly oscillates between wakefulness and sleep, making room for the perfect encounter with the German collective's music: the reduced aesthetics and the free spaces created by the film's images, allow each viewer to make their own reading and find their own emotions - just as listeners do with their music.

Carnival of Souls is a 1960s American psychological thriller produced and directed by Herk Harvey. A B-series classic, employing various guerrilla filming techniques, it gained cult status due to several television appearances and Halloween programming in the 1980s. Today, it is praised in several film schools for its cinematography, light and sound, and integrates the list of references of names such as David Lynch, George A. Romero and Lucrecia Martel. In this presentation in Vila do Conde, it will have an original soundtrack, produced by Miaux, who will replace the BSO organs with her analogue synthesizers. A rising name in the Central European underground universe, Miaux has been editing her creations via Ultra Eczema and has been recognised for her skills as a composer and for the timeless expressiveness of her creations.

The two film-concerts are produced in partnership with the Film Fest Gent, and were special commissions by the Kunstencentrum VIERNULVIER and the Ghent Festival for the Videodroom series.
