Pedro Serrazina: Perspectives on Portuguese Animation at Curtas
Celebrating the recent success of Percebes, by Alexandra Ramires (Xá) and Laura Gonçalves, winner of the Cristal prize for best short film at the 2024 edition of the Annecy Animated Film Festival, this debate presents two recent publications dedicated to animated cinema in Portugal.
Originally conceived and developed by director and researcher Pedro Serrazina, this initiative was born out of a symposium organized at Cinanima - International Animated Film Festival, with the aim of bringing the depth of debate and analysis typical of real image cinema to the world of animation.
This project aimed to highlight the true protagonists of animation: the films. To this end, in the first edition of "Perspectives on Portuguese Animation", Pedro Serrazina invited experts from various fields to offer their perspectives on the work of Vasco Sá and David Doutel. The second edition, coordinated by Cátia Peres, was dedicated to Alexandra Ramires (Xá) and Laura Gonçalves.
The importance of this project lies in creating a legacy of critical analysis that can serve as a reference for future generations. Portuguese animation, which has distinguished itself through its authored short films, is currently beginning to conquer other formats, such as feature films and games. This transitional phase, marked by the emergence of a new generation of authors, makes it even more crucial to document and analyze its contemporary panorama.
The two books from this project offer a comprehensive overview of four directors from BAP - Studio, addressing key partnerships in contemporary, not only in Portugal but also at the European level.
This presentation thus celebrates the studio's work, which has been successful on the festival circuit for over a decade and is characterized by an authorial cinema with a strong identity. This is particularly important as the filmography of the directors being analyzed reflects a vision that questions Portuguese territory, traditions, and customs, documenting changing cultural landscapes.
The presentation "Perspectives on Portuguese Animation" is, therefore, a celebration of the richness and diversity of Portuguese animation, and an opportunity to recognize and analyze films that not only represent a cultural heritage but also point to the future of this artistic practice.
