The 32nd Curtas in numbers: a total of 239 films from 45 countries, screened in 83 sessions, as well as 6 film concerts and musical shows, 2 exhibitions, 9 talks, 10 industry events, 7 happy hours, and 3 parties, with a total of 20.000 spectators.
At the 32nd edition of Curtas de Vila do Conde, both international and portuguese competitions featured a selection of 48 films spanning various genres including fiction, documentary, and animation. The international competition showcased promising new talents such as Nebojša Slijepčević (winner at Cannes for ‘The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent’), Frank Sweeney (winner at Rotterdam for ‘Few Can See’), Ilir Hasanaj (winner at Rotterdam for ‘Workers’ Wings'), and Eric K. Boulianne (winner at Locarno for “Making Babies”). Notable returns included Torill Kove (presented 'Maybe Elephants' for the third time at Curtas), Samir Karahoda (with 'On the Way'), Florence Miailhe (with 'Papillon'), Nina Gantz (with 'Wander to Wonder'), Nicolas Keppens (participating for the third time with 'Beautiful Men'), Corina Schwingruber Ilić (making her fourth appearance with 'Been There'), and Elena López Riera (the 2019 Curtas Grand Prix winner and a highlighted filmmaker in the 2020 New Voices program).
On the Portuguese side, Curtas once again emphasized the vitality, diversity, and energy of several generations of filmmakers, some making their debut and others already very well known to the festival's audience. Throughout the week, works by David Pinheiro Vicente, Francisca Manuel, Isadora Neves Marques, Inês Lima, Daniel Soares, Rita M. Pestana, Patrícia Neves Gomes, Frederico Mesquita, Sofia Borges, Margarida Assis, Margarida Vila-Nova, Pedro Caldas, Alexandra Ramires, Laura Gonçalves, Luís Costa, Mário Macedo, Maria Trigo Teixeira, Joana Nogueira and Patrícia Rodrigues passed through Vila do Conde.
The festival kicked off with a concert film by João Gonzalez, a director who Curtas has been following since his first school films up to "Ice Merchants", which won an award at Cannes and made it to the Oscars. In a session featuring his films and some personal choices, the director and composer performed the soundtracks to these films live for the first time. Additionally, in a unique collaboration, HHY & The Macumbas and the generative art collective rooted in Artificial Intelligence, Lunar Ring, presented an exceptional concert that showcased the potential of improvisation and spontaneity at Curtas.
This year's New Voices section included a look at the work of Catalan director Laura Ferrés - with a film program that included some of her films, a carte blanche, and a conversation with the audience - and Greek filmmaker Yorgos Zois.
The festival also included programs focusing on the works of Bertrand Mandico, Elina Löwensohn and Alberto Vázquez, as well as the two concert films in the Stereo section: Filipe Melo, João Pereira and Beatriz Batarda x Le Jetée, by Chris Marker; and Dada Garbeck x A Pedra Sonha Dar Flor, by Rodrigo Areias; as well as the musical performance by Lula Pena at Casa do Xisto.
It's worth noting that the 32nd Curtas Vila do Conde received 6,674 entries from 138 countries this year.
More than 20.000 spectators took part in the 32nd Curtas Vila do Conde, including film screenings, exhibitions, workshops, talks, master classes, activities for industry professionals, parties, and happy hours.
