Turbo Junk I.E. and Billy Roisz join Stereo programme
More news from the Stereo programme: the reunion and concert of Vila do Conde's band Turbo Junk I.E.; a special session with the Austrian experimental filmmaker Billy Roisz; a film dedicated to bossa nova's voice Miúcha; a documentary about the Portuguese band Clã.
It will be one of the special and unrepeatable sessions of the 31st Curtas Vila do Conde, the reunion of the Vila do Conde's band TURBO JUNK I.E.. With Maquete'92, a film directed by Paulo Pinto and screend in preview at the festival, the band will meet again on stage on July 10th, at 23h30, at Vila do Conde Municipal Theatre. The programme will also be accompanied by an exhibition-installation by Cesário Alves – photographer who accompanied the band at the time of its emergence and growth on the national scene.
New in the Stereo programme is also the special programme dedicated to the Austrian director Billy Roisz, presented by the designer and artist Miguel Carvalhais. Experimental filmmaker, Roisz demonstrates a remarkable capacity to translate experimental music into images of visual memory, revealing links to minimal art and conceptual art. He specialises in feedback video and the interaction between video and sound, using monitors, cameras, video mixing desks, a DYI video synthesizer, a computer, a bass guitar and turntables to generate video and sound. This session will be held in partnership with the Waking Life festival, taking place in June, in Crato.
As in previous editions, the Solar – Galeria de Arte Cinemática will host open-air cinema with a programme that will also include music documentaries. In the 2023 edition of Curtas will be screened Na Sombra II, the second part of a documentary that Joana X made with Clã about the creation process of Véspera, the band's most recent album. This second part focuses on the way the band faces the challenges imposed by the pandemic, in the middle of the album's conclusion and release phase.
Integrated in the Stereo section, with a screening scheduled at the Vila do Conde Municipal Theatre, is also the film Miúcha, A Voz da Bossa Nova. The film by Liliane Mutti and Daniel Zarvos tells the story of the Brazilian singer, often reduced to being Chico Buarque's sister and João Gilberto's wife. Using the singer's personal archives (photographs, letters, watercolours and audio recordings) as a point of departure, it is a document about her place in the bossa nova movement, but also about the personal difficulties and costs she faced in building a solo career.
