Open Call for the 3rd European Workshop for New Curators
Applications are open from March 9th to April 13th, 2026, for the 3rd edition of the European Workshop for New Curators, an initiative organised by the European Network for Film Discourse (The END) and Talking Shorts, aimed at aspiring film programmers and curators.
This initiative is designed to provide valuable training in the film industry for aspiring film critics across Europe. The workshop will consist of two one-week sessions, allowing participants to enhance their skills and knowledge in film criticism.
The workshop will take place in two phases, each lasting one week, within the context of film festivals: from July 17th to 24th at the Curtas Vila do Conde – International Film Festival (Portugal), and from August 16 to 23 at the FeKK – Ljubljana Short Film Festival (Slovenia).
The programme focuses on two main areas: community-building through cinema and the practicalities of festival programming. It aims to explore how curatorial practices can foster communities, while also addressing the operational and collaborative aspects of working within film festivals. Ethical, political, and socio-economic questions will guide both discussions and practical exercises, encouraging participants to reflect on the future of the film festival ecosystem.
The workshop will be conducted in English and will include theoretical sessions, group discussions, guest lectures, writing exercises, and hands-on curatorial work. Participants will develop their own short film programme, which will be presented online via the This Is Short streaming platform.
The workshop will be led by Lyse Ishimwe Nsengiyumva, a film programmer and photographer based in Belgium, currently working with the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the BlackStar Film Festival.
The call is open to Europe-based applicants aged 18 and over who demonstrate a strong interest in film curation, have a good command of English, and are available to attend both workshop sessions in full. A total of six participants will be selected.
Results will be announced by April 24th, 2026. Those interested may view the regulations and/or submit their application at www.talkkingshorts.com.
