More than just a competitive section of Curtas, one of the most anticipated and applauded by the audience in Vila do Conde, the Portuguese Competition is above all a meeting point for the Portuguese film community.
The 2024 selection of Curtas once again emphasizes the vitality, diversity, and energy of various generations of filmmakers, some making their debut and others already well known to the festival audience. As for the films, they are all absolute premieres in Portugal, although some have already had auspicious international premieres: Isadora Neves Marques presented “My Senses Are All I Have to Offer” in the demanding selection of Cannes Critics' Week, and Inês Lima premiered “The Moving Garden” at the prestigious Cannes Directors' Fortnight; Daniel Soares received an honorable mention in the official short film selection at Cannes with “Bad for a Moment”.
Among the newcomers, who are usually very well received, this year we have Rita M. Pestana (“Combat”), Patrícia Neves Gomes (“The Convent Gardener”), Frederico Mesquita (“Francisco Perdido”), Sofia Borges (“53”), Margarida Assis (“God-and-a-Half”). Among the returning filmmakers, besides Margarida Vila-Nova, who comes back to Curtas with “Penélope”, there are some directors who have already tasted victory and glory in previous editions: Pedro Caldas was doubly awarded with “Application for a Job” (2000) and “Europa 2007” (2007); Alexandra Ramires returns to Curtas after “Tie” (2020) won Best Animation in the International Competition; Luís Costa has already won the Audience Award (Portuguese Competition) with “Our Kingdom” (2020); Mário Macedo won the Best Director Award (Portuguese Competition) with “Skin River” (2021); Maria Trigo Teixeira won the Take One!'s Best Director with "Inside Me"; Joana Nogueira and Patrícia Rodrigues won the Take One! Award with “That’s How it Was” (2016).
