The Jury Committee of CURTAS'24

Curtas Vila do Conde has announced the jury committee selected for the different competitions at the 32nd edition of the festival.

Internacional Competition


· Laura Ferrés

Laura Ferrés is a writer and director. Her first short film, “The Disinherited," is a portrait of the director’s father facing the end of the family bus company. The film premiered at Cannes Film Festival Critics’ Week, where it won Best Short Film. It was screened at 80 other festivals, nominated for the European Film Awards, and awarded Best Short Film at Premios Goya. Her first feature-length film, “The Permanen Picture,” premiered at the Official Selection of Locarno’s Film Festival. After screening in Spanish film theaters and achieving several nominations at Premios Goya, the film is still touring at festivals such as New Directors/New Films at MoMA and Lincoln Center in New York.


· Jing Haase

Jing Haase is the festival manager for short films at the Swedish Film Institute. She plans festival strategies, consults on international distribution, and handles the festival distribution of selected films. She has been working with short films for more than two decades, with a focus on international distribution. She has previously also worked as a programmer and in film production. She is often used as a moderator, panelist, and jury member at international festivals and industry events.


· Caroline Maleville

Caroline Maleville is a graduate from University Paris 8 and La Fémis Cinema School with Master degrees. After various experiences in distribution and film institutions, she joined the French Cinematheque in 2005. As a programming manager since 2009, she has been regularly organizing events dedicated to contemporary innovative filmmaking. Beyond her collaborations with the Locarno Film Festival, the FEMA La Rochelle, and Entrevues in Belfort, she is also a member of several script reading committees. Since 2022, she has also been part of the selection committee of the Director’s Fortnight in Cannes.


· Miguel Ribeiro

Miguel Ribeiro is the artistic coordinator of Casa do Comum, a newly inaugurated space in Lisbon with a multidisciplinary program that includes cinema, music, and performing arts, alongside a bookstore and a bar. Previously, he was part of the Doclisboa team, where he joined in 2012 as a programming coordinator and directed the festival from 2020 to 2023. He founded the production company Filmes do Asfalto and was a member of the artistic collective Rabbit Hole. He has been a board member of Apordoc since 2016 and is a regular presence on panels, debates, and juries at film festivals, including DocumentaMadrid (Spain) and CPH (Denmark).



· Laure Saint-Marc

Laure Saint-Marc is a French film editor. She began editing documentaries with Isy Morgensztern, Stéphanie Gillard, and Nurith Aviv, among others. She has also edited numerous shorts, experimental films, and features. Her long collaboration with Bertrand Mandico led her to work as a sound editor on several of his films, and as a script supervisor on his first two features. She is currently working on Marie Losier’s documentary.



Experimental Competition


· Ana Dominguez Díaz

Ana Dominguez Díaz defines herself as a visual creator and filmmaker, considering her transition to cinema a natural process where the camera becomes an extension of artistic expression. She has built her career writing scripts for theater productions and performances in the international collective Ball-Cans. Additionally, she creates short pieces and video installations. She participates in the AA+++ film creation laboratory, dedicated to performance film. She is the co-founder and co-director of (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico in A Coruña, Spain, dedicated to experimental cinema and its contemporary expressions. “Os Fillos da Vide” is her first feature film.


· João Laia

With a background in social sciences, film theory, and contemporary art, from 2019 to 2023, João Laia took on the role of chief curator at Kiasma – Helsinki’s National Museum of Contemporary Art. He is currently the Artistic Director of the Department of Contemporary Art Ágora – Cultura e Desporto do Porto, E.M., where he coordinates the programming and management of the Galeria Municipal do Porto, the Pláka artistic practice support platform, the Fonoteca Municipal do Porto, as well as other cultural and artistic projects. In the field of publishing and writing, he edited the books “Living Encounters” (Kiasma/Mousse, 2022) and “A Multiple Community” (Sesc, 2018), and has written several articles in specialist magazines such as Art Monthly, Flash Art, frieze, Mousse, Spike, and Terremoto.


· Raquel Schefer

Raquel Schefer is a researcher, filmmaker, programmer, and Associate Professor in the Department of Cinema and Audiovisual at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle. She holds a PhD in Film and Audiovisual Studies from the same university, a master’s degree in Documentary Cinema from the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, and a bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences from the NOVA University of Lisbon. She is also the co-editor-in-chief of the cinema theory and history journal, La Furia Umana.

· Ana David

Ana David is a film programmer based in Berlin and Porto. Currently, she works as a curator at Batalha Centro de Cinema and is a member of the selection committee for Berlinale Panorama. She also serves as a programming advisor for the Márgenes festival in Madrid. Her previous roles include positions at IndieLisboa, Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, BFI London Film Festival, and Queer Lisboa.


· Vitor Ribeiro

Vitor Ribeiro is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Arts and Humanities of the University of Minho. His research focuses on "Cinematic Landscapes for the Metaphors of J. G. Ballard." He works as a film programmer at Casa das Artes de Famalicão and directs the Cineclube de Joane. Vitor is also a jury member for the competitions of the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual and regularly contributes articles about cinema to publications such as Público and À pala de Walsh.


· Daniel Soares

Daniel Soares is a Portuguese filmmaker. His short films have been showcased at prestigious festivals including Cannes, Telluride, Locarno, and Clermont-Ferrand. His films have received awards at festivals such as Cannes, Premiers Plans d’Angers, and Zagreb Film Festival. In addition to his film work, Daniel's photographic work has been exhibited at the International Center of Photography in New York.



Music Videos Competition


· Paula Guerra

Paula Guerra is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Porto and a Researcher at the Institute of Sociology. She is also affiliated with Griffith University in Australia. Paula is the founder/coordinator of the Todas as Artes Network and KISMIF, and is involved with various associations related to the study of popular music and the sociology of the arts. She has numerous publications in the fields of art, culture, and popular music.


· Ivo Teixeira

Ivo Teixeira is a visual artist and professor at the University of Porto and the Portucalense University. He holds a PhD in Digital Media – Audiovisual and Interactive Content Creation. Ivo is the co-founder of Openfield-CreativeLab, a creative studio that explores the intersection of art and technology to create immersive experiences.


· Jonathan Tavares

Jonathan Tavares has extensive experience in training services, consulting, public relations, and communication within the music and culture sectors. He co-administers Studiobruto, a Graphic Design Studio, and 70210 Agency, which specializes in advisory and communication management for clients such as Super Bock, Festival Sónar, WOS, Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, and Porto City Council.
