In the summer of 1896, Aurélio Paz do Reis (1862-1931), a floriculturist and photographer, will have probably given birth to the Portuguese cinema, by filming 'Saída do Pessoal Operário da Fábrica Confiança' (also known as 'Saída do Pessoal Operário da Camisaria Confiança') at Catarina St., in Oporto. In this first year, Paz dos Reis made thirty-five short films, presenting seven of them, on 12th November 1896, at the Príncipe Real theatre: 'Jogo de Pau', 'Saída do Pessoal Operário da Fábrica Confiança', 'Chegada de um Comboio Americano a Cadouços', 'O Zé Pereira na Romaria de Santo Tirso', 'A Feira de São Bento', 'A Rua do Ouro', 'Marinha no Tejo', 'Saída de Dois Vapores' (on 12th November Paz dos Reis had already presented some of these films at the same theatre, for the press and guests). From all the works by the pioneer of Portuguese cinema, only the few minutes, here put together, have survived, brief fragments of the first images, filmed in Portugal by a Portuguese. Only it is not known the real author of these films: Paz dos Reis or his brother-in-law, Magalhães Bastos Jr.
