It's a perfectly serious George Méliès who performs in front of the camera sensational conjuring tricks, brimful of imagination. Far from being merely a magician's sleights of hand, these film excerpts from the beginning of the century, interspersed by passages in black, provide a spectacle of scientific demonstrations. As for the music, it flirts with spirals of smoke, balloons, the flighty butterfly woman, Richard Wagner operating his time shifted spell. In this way, the balloons sold by a vendor in a park are connected in some way with those being used for experiments in the laboratory.
