Conversations in Vermont opens with a blurred self-portrait of Frank cleaning his camera lens. This first autobiographical film follows the film-maker and is two children, Pablo and Andrea. At its heart is the desire to take stock, to shed light on the past. In a journey from the self to the other, Frank revisits his children's life, confronting the past and the present, through photographs and filmed sequences shot in the Vermont school where he pays them a visit. In frank and candid dialogues the father of two reflects upon the quality and the consequences of his children's unconventional upbringing. These scenes, magnificently filmed by Ralph Gibson, show Frank baring his soul, admitting his helplessness and his mistakes with genuine sincerity. The occasionally haphazard techniques serves only to underscore the emotional force of this intensely personal and painful film.
