Young count Ottavio gets caught in a raid to a brothel and the news appears in a scandal sheet. The count's lawyers invade his palace in Milan, an aristocratic mansion where Ottavio lives with his wife, Pupe. When Pupe's father reads the news in the paper he calls his daughter and decides to cancel her bank accounts. But Pupe seems not to be jealous: she tells the servants to serve lunch, talks calmly with her husband and takes a luxurious bath. When her husband wants to make love to her she demands to be paid. At the beginning she sees this as a mere joke but she eventually understands that her work can be called conjugal prostitution.«(...) I like this film very much. I think it depicts the character of a woman, as so many we know, mainly in the Milan society. A modern woman who grants a great importance to money, luxury, cars, a box in the Scala and things of that sort whereas she grants no importance at all to those things that really matter. I was criticised for that moment of emotion close to the end
