In 1997 cameraman Hein van Liempd and I visited Hong Kong for 5 days. I had heard that the airport Kai Tak, which was situated in the middle of the city, would be closed that year. Approaching Kai Tak was a unique experience for the passengers. 'One could read the newspapers in the street' one passenger exclaimed. My goal was to make a film about airplanes and a city. Preparation and research for the film was done on the internet. I found out that there were several websites dedicated to 'plane-spotters', people whose hobby it is to make lists of what, where and when they saw certain types of airplanes. Sitting at home behind my computer I found about ten locations where 'plane spotting' in Hong Kong was good. The preparation of the film was done completely virtually. I made a shooting schedule, found a cheap flight and off we went. We arrived jet-lagged in Hong Kong, found our way to our hotel, rented a car, checked our equipment and before we realized it the planes were flying over our heads in 2 minute int
