3 DVD loopsThe brothers Lumière invented cinematography. At their time public perception could not be taken for granted the way it is today. In order to be able to perceive movement of pictures as an illusion, recipients had to resort to forms of reception already known to them in order to be able to decipher the form of movement. The prereposit for changed methods of perception was created through the railways. For the first time movement was not experienced through one's own body but merely through looking through the compartment window at moving landscape with which there is no direct contact. If the windows exchange for a screen, the view from the train can be seen as an anticipation of the cinema experience. For that reason the train was one of the frequently used motifs in the first films of the Lumière brothers.A lot of films were recorded out of windows of trains, and in many later cases the camera was actually mounted on top of the locomotive, and so-called Phantom Rides were filmed.The [VID] Video installation tries to establish the connections that exist between Lumière's camera and the locomotive. The movement of the machines of the locomotive leads to a accelerated movement in the room. (Horst Scheiböck)
