“This first film is about the links between the imaginary world and objective reality. The film starts and finishes in the realm of reality. Meanwhile, the imagination, which is presented here in the form of a dream, intervenes. It seizes a particular incident and gives it considerable importance and then takes the product of its journeys into reality. The main character is not a victim of hallucinations, on the contrary, she is destroyed by an imaginary action. Such a development, does not follow a logic function in any known reality, but it’s a necessity; a destiny shaped like the logic of the film itself. Therefore the formal whole is in itself the reality and the meaning of the film. It’s a creation that takes elements from reality: people, places and objects but they are arranged so that they produce a new reality, a new context that defines them according to the function that they occupy in the latter. Therefore, they are not symbols in the sense that they refer to any meaning or values outside the film. They’re images where the value and the meaning are defined and limited to their function in the film.” Art in Cinema, San Francisco Museum of Art, 1947.
