In 1966 ten New York artists and thirty engineers and scientists from Bell Telephone Laboratories collaborated on a series of innovative dance, music and theater performances. Barbro Schultz filmed the performance that John Cage and David Tudor made within this project. With Variations VII, the aim of the artists was to capture the movements of the participants, integrating the sounds coming the room where the performance took place but also sounds from the city and even from space, through interactive devices and antennas (devised by Bob Moog). Phones were connected in several different places (restaurants, zoo, factories…) in addition to TVs, radios, Geiger counters, aquariums for turtles and even a system for capturing the participants’ spinal waves. Schultz also directed a documentary that includes statements from participants and viewers of the event, such as Terry Riley and Nam June Paik, but in this session we will only see the original documentary with the original images recorded during the 1966 performance.
