“I’m going to give the people what they want: sensation, horror, shock.” - Henry Jarrod, “House of Wax”“House of Wax” director, André de Toth, could surely give people what they wanted: a house of horrors as meticulously sculpted as figures in a wax museum. Besides being a great instance of the genre, it gave Vincent Price one of the best performances of his career. The story takes place in the early 20th century where a young sculptor named Henry Jarrod suffers serious burns after the fire that destroys his wax museum. Unable to sculpt again due to the burns, he collects human beings for his new exhibition – a real chamber of horrors. House of Wax was the first 3D film produced by one of the major Hollywood studios (Warner Brothers), the first horror film to be filmed in stereo and one of the few horror films of the time in colour. At a time when traditional gothic horror was being substituted by small budget science fiction, the sophisticated production values and the 3D effects granted the film considerable success. Strangely enough, André de Toth was never able to watch the film in 3D because of being blind in one eye.
