This documentary abut the life and work of one of the great filmmakers of his generation, gives the viewer a good impression of his personality through the eyes of others who worked with him and is narrated by Tom Cruise. Except for Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen and Alan Parker, all the contributors had experienced Stanley Kubrick through working with him on one or several of his films; they tell us their own stories and subjective experiences. Jan Harlan tried to show the “red ribbon” that connects all of Kubrick’s films, different as they are in form and genre – in substance they all reveal Kubrick’s concern and hard look at human nature, at our folly and vanity – this is true for the early film “Paths of Glory” as much as for Kubrick’s last film “Eyes Wide Shut” or the brilliant concept for “A.I. Artificial Intelligence”, a film he had carefully prepared before he offered it to Steven Spielberg who made the film after Stanley’s death. A common reaction to this documentary is the desire to see this or that Kubrick film again or, indeed, for the first time.
