It might be surprising at first that a filmmaker be asked to choose the musicians for a rock festival but it makes sense for Olivier Assayas to have had carte blanche at the Art Rock Festival in Saint-Brieuc in 2005, considering his films are testimony to the influence of post-punk rock on his work and life. Assayas invited a range of artists from the world of independent rock to the field of experimental music. “Noise” is the resulting documentary film, with performances by Metric, Mirror/Dash (Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth), Jeanne Balibar, Marie Modiano, Afel Bakoum, White Tahina and others. The experimental images (from the film Hotel Athiti, which will be shown in full on a monitor in the Red Foyer) that were projected on stage during the concert are juxtaposed with footage of the performances.
