Willie, the son of "Steamboat Bill", the captain of a steamboat, goes to visit his father after years of separation. Steamboat Bill tries to make a man out of this young man who is too delicate and refined for his taste. The events to come (an unfair competition with another steamboat led by the rich businees man whose daughter is in love with Keaton, as well as a huge storm) will transform Bill Junior. Co-written and co-directed by Keaton in 1928, even though he is only listed as an actor in the credits, Steamboat Bill is one of his first full-length silent films. The film contains numerous stunts performed, as usual, by Keaton himself. In the most memorable scene, the side of a building falls on Bill Junior, who only manages to survive because the placement of his body matches up exactly with a window on the side of the building. The scene was shot with a real wall, and not with a set piece, and the story goes that half the crew wanted to not film it to avoid the danger.
