What is a pyjama party? Maybe a childish or youthful notion of a certain illusion of night-time freedom. A supervised party. This pyjama party, however, is a lot less innocent than that, since David Pantaleón creates a satire on Spanish politics over the last 40 years and its economic and social contradictions. It is satire disguised as a party, in which the adults are politicians and leaders of top institutions (including Angela Merkel, Mario Draghi, José María Aznar and Cristina de Borbón), who dance and inhabit the dilapidated quarters of a forgotten building. The situations are almost all ordinary: drinking shots, a couple naked on a mattress, people sitting at the kitchen table having coffee. However, everything has lost its charm because here the pyjamas are a symbol of the forced stripping down of the Spanish economy. In the form of masked actors, the politicians and leaders start to come back: a shadow of their former selves, a ridiculous, always static presence on screen that forces us to look closely, as if at a painting. In fact, the film ends with framed paintings: portraits of iconic works of Spanish architecture, debased by a red stain and the strident sound of an explosion. Spanish society is effectively an illusion of itself and its lies. This is the first work to be screened at Vila do Conde by David Pantaleón, a director who has already made several short films. (DR)
