According to the theology of the Catholic Church, limbo is a term that can have two meanings. It can be the undefined state between life and death, or it can be a place of natural happiness beyond heaven reserved for children who have not been baptized. The film “Limbo” is set in a suspended place between the clouds and the water where there are 12 children. This is the spot where a mysterious albino child and a whale both wash up on the shore. Konstantina Kotzamani, whose film “Washingtonia” was shown in 2015 in the international competition, has two films programmed for this edition of Curtas, (see “Yellow Fieber” on International Competition 7). In “Limbo” she beautifully orchestrates an allegory full of suspense, manipulating icons and subliminal imagery whose roots lie in both religion and folklore, including the parallelism with passages from the Old and the New Testament, the expression of the numbers 1 and 12, the composition of the frame and the position of the bodies. It involves the audience in a succession of sublime and haunting images in a film of unrelenting solemnity. (SR)
