Há Terra”, the latest work by Ana Vaz, is a film poem shot in 16mm which explores the evolution in time between predator and prey. There is no hunt without an encounter between the hunter and the hunted – and there must also be a “stage” on which the hunt takes place. Ana Vaz films in the Brazilian sertão (outback) where the rapid camera movements seem to pursue a young native girl who represents indigenous values in confrontation with the colonisers. As the narrative unfolds, some of the words we hear are spoken in “European Portuguese”, the language of the predator/coloniser. “Há Terra!” (“There is land!”), a phrase repeated throughout the film, emerges with a double meaning. On the one hand, it evokes colonialism, but it is also the slogan of the Landless Movement (Movimento dos Sem Terra). Ana Vaz returns to the Festival after presenting “Entre Temps” in 2013. (SG)
