Born in Providence, the American writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft was almost unknown while alive and died in poverty. He achieved posthumous fame becoming a cult author for his influence on fantasy and horror in literature. After residing in various cities in the USA he returned to Providence for the last part of his life, enjoying the most productive ten years of his literary career – although without commercial success. Through mysterious recordings allegedly found in his last home “Return To Providence” reveals a man lost in his fantasies, divided between irrational fears, daydreams, the rediscovered peace of his childhood home, and the state of trance, madness and unconsciousness in which he wrote his stories. The film is a joint production of several members of the Collectif Comet, noted for their experimental approach and unconventional projects. In the words of the group’s presentation “They are drafts, moving landscapes, above all roads to follow”. Curtas is screening another work of the group, “Les Voisins”, by Benjamin Hameury. (MD)
