Positive-negative, day-night, light-dark – there are two distinct worlds, just like those of the living and the dead, which a young woman visits in the same way that the mythical goddess Persephone would appear and disappear each year. Using animated cuts and juxtaposing images of personal memorabilia such as old photographs, negatives, engravings of local animals, diagrams and drawings of human anatomy, or simple patterns and textures, Janie Geiser creates a storyline out of images that are both mysterious and almost undecipherable which also wander between two different worlds. The soundtrack is made up of songs found in old recordings, the majority of which are played backwards, yet in synchrony with the nature of the images, themselves a bit dated. Janie Geiser has already screened one film at Curtas, also in the experimental competition, in 2012. (MM)
