“Estilhaços” provides two perspectives on the Portuguese colonial war, the first of a man who lived through it and second, of his son whose memories of the armed conflict are constructed from the reports of the father. The film’s approach to war is to highlight the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder on the family unit, still an uncomfortable theme in Portuguese fiction. The “Shrapnel” of the title refers as much to the consequences to the family as to the fragments of some explosive device. At times almost a documentary record, José Miguel Ribeiro, with mastery and fluidity, applies different animation techniques to the many different visions of the war, present and past. José Miguel Ribeiro is one of the most respected and awarded directors of Portuguese animation, notably winning a Cartoon d'Or in 2000 for "A suspeita”. His films are a familiar presence at the Curtas, which has featured almost all of his short films: “Ovo” (1996), “A suspeita” (2000), “Abraço do vento” (which won the Onda Curta award in 2004), “Passeio de domingo” (2009), “Viagem a Cabo Verde” (Best international animation and Onda Curta awards 2010) and “Dodu, o rapaz de cartão” (2011). In 2014, Curtas produced the film “20 Desenhos e um abraço” at the artists residency of Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery, which over the last decade has exhibited and presented several of his films as part of its “Animar” exhibition.
