The video artist Dara Birnbaum has created a montage of the famous transformation sequences of Wonder Woman, featured in the 1970s American television series of the same name. The accumulation of these scenes, characterised by ‘cross-fades’ and various luminous pyrotechnic effects, creates an effect of repetition that is enhanced by the dialogue and funk music soundtrack, and exposes the artificiality of television techniques and their contribution to the objectification of the female body. The final sequence in particular, showing the lyrics of the song “Wonder Woman” – a hit in 1978 for The Wonderland Disco Band - on a monochrome background, casts a critical eye on the role of popular culture in the construction of gender stereotypes. “Technology/Transformation” can also be seen as a forerunner of the ‘supercut’, a technique much used in the making of the audiovisual essay which similarly consists of an anthology of scenes of the same type taken from an entire film or a complete television series.
