One of the most enthusiastic directors and promoters of the audiovisual digital essay, Catherine Grant is also one of the most recognized English academics. “The VERTIGO of Anagnorisis” fits her experiences into this line of work, trying to analyze concepts through practical examples of cinematographic sequences. In the case of this film, she uses the classic dual-screen device to make an analogy between the moving images that are seen on both sides. The concept under question is that of Anagnorisis, a narrative moment in which the characters discover something important about themselves. The prime example of this concept is the scene in “Star Wars - Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back” (1980) in which Darth Vader reveals to Luke that he is Luke’s father, uttering the famous phrase “Luke, I am your father”. The scene is contrasted with another, in “Vertigo” (1958), directed by Alfred Hitchcock in which Scottie in an extreme situation manifests his fear of heights. His vertigo is created through a “vertigo effect” developed by Hitchcock himself - a combination of zoom movement forwards, together with a travelling backwards, or vice versa. The joining of the two sequences precisely shows the tragic and dramatic nature of a moment of revelation and its consequence: the voluntary fall of Luke and the near fall of Scottie. The trauma caused by Anagnorisis has a tragic consequence. This work is a prime example of the use of cinema as a machine that thinks, but also the personal relationship of the author with the films cited and which relate to academic writing. (DR)
