With the unlikely Manuel Mozos playing the leading role, “Fantasmas” is loosely inspired by a short story by Paul Auster. However, this Ricardo Alves film is, above all, a nod to Hollywood film noir (lacking only the traditional blond femme fatale). Filmed in black and white in 16mm with a fitting sound track, it creates a noir ambiance that serves as the backdrop for a game of “cat and mouse” that keeps the spectator alert and interested in solving the central mystery of the drama, and also in identifying the many cinephile references to films by Alfred Hitchcock, Aki Kaurismaki and Jean-Luc Godard.
