With almost guerrilla-like passion, the Independent Cinema Office (ICO) and Lux, using funds obtained from Arts Council England, produced a series of art films to be shown prior to ordinary commercial films in an initiative called The Cinema Programme. Amongst the directors selected was Gabriel Abrantes, who availed himself of this opportunity to produce a short film of exceptional interest: an art film on a rather unusual sculpture and the sculptor Constantin Brancusi. Abrantes develops the plot in a playful way by starting off with the supposed turmoil surrounding Brancusi and the animated and unremitting clamour over his model, the great grand-niece of Napoleon Bonaparte. The depiction of Princess X, a bust, was stripped of almost everything which the artist considered superfluous, thus expressing the crux of the adventure that is modern art. The alteration of the paradigm that is the plastic arts is thus documented in the voice of the narrator, Abrantes himself, and in the artist with his chisel (as if in the first person), who was guided by the least orthodox reasons possible to undertake this long journey on the borders between figuration and abstraction. The result leaves us with no a shadow of a doubt – it is a princess not a sex toy! From early on, Gabriel Abrantes has shown an iconoclastic attitude and has made some surprising films that transpose territories, whether they are reserved for the cinema or for the visual arts. The Curtas Film Festival has presented some of these works in a variety of contexts, including the main competition, and has even invited the director to participate in the Stereo Project, which resulted in the film “Baby Back Costa Rica,” a Curtas Metragens CRL production made in 2012 in collaboration with musician Pedro Gomes.
