A woman returns to Portugal with her son, Tiago, after many years away. They return to a familiar but unstable place where the past still both dazzles and terrifies. Mother and son feel their way around their new surroundings: an apartment crammed with boxes and an unknown future in a sunny Lisbon – a summer of possibilities. But mother and son are also seeking their place in the world and someone with whom to connect. James looks for his father, who repeatedly does not answer his phone. The mother meets a man, perhaps the remnant of an old love. Despite the familiarity of the location, the two remain lost. The latest Leonor Noivo film continues the theme of some of his short films ("Salitre", 2005 and “A Cidade e o Sol”, 2012, were previously shown at the festival): characters in a kind of existentialist paralysis, an emotional vacuum, expressed here only by the mother’s voiceover, looking to make sense of her return.
