From the outset, against the backdrop or images of soldiers marching off to war, there is something ominous hovering over this mass of nameless people, something akin to a mournful fog floating off to darken its next destination. In this abstract journey through the real nightmare that is the horror of war, a procession of indistinct but identical bodies sinks into a bog of mud, blood and shell fragments. The trace of animation appears as barbed wire which imprisons the pitiful souls of these soldiers in a claustrophobic series of events. This is a story of disappearances, extinguished lives and voiceless screams. While the soldiers, hidden behind masks, march toward the trenches and pass the figures of the fallen, they encounter an image of their immediate future, one which is menacing since it may well come true for them. This is the third animated film by Filipe Abranches, a successful animation artist and illustrator, whose film “Sanguentina” appeared at Vila do Conde in 2012. (JA)
