At a time when almost all the information we receive is extremely filtered (and distorted) by the media, "Greetings from Aleppo" introduces us a vision of the war in Syria which, besides sounding very real, is very different from the one we are used to seeing. Instead of trying to explain the conflict, the Syrian photographer Issa Touma shows us how the inhabitants of Aleppo, who refuse to leave their homes, live. The sound of the guns in the street is uninterrupted, but it seems that we (the spectators) are the only ones who hear it. For them, to whom the film is dedicated, the background noise has been part of their lives for more than five years. Surviving is living in a mixture of madness and denial, always struggling for another "normal" day, even if this means sharing the living room with an unexploded bomb. A man keeps his luxury car to take the newly-married couples around town for free. Are these people still alive? The absurdity of the war failed to reverse its perseverance in the struggle for human dignity. (LQ)
