It starts with a simple question, but that turns out to be complex as new permutations arise. When we see an interaction between an actor and an element of nature, such as a tree for instance, why do we only consider the actor as an interpreter? Shouldn’t we also consider the natural element as part of a performance, that is to say, an artistic manifestation? These are some of the questions raised by an actress, Kati Outinen, known for his roles in different films by Aki Kaurismäki, as the motto for a series of visual exercises that illustrate different theoretical interpretations about the artistic representation. After all, other animal species experience the world differently from us, they have a different temporal and spatial sense. If they are, at least in the situations featured in the film, complex organisms like humans, shouldn’t they also deserve to be considered as an active part and not only as a decorative element? Thus, "Studies on the Ecology of Drama" is a film that questions the lack of understanding by the spectator, questioning the way we are used to looking both at the cinema and at nature. (JA)
