The debut of Mazaheri at Curtas is a dive into contemporary Iran, following the line of his compatriots Jafar Panahi and especially Ashgar Farhadi. He shares with the latter the gaze "from the particular to the general", with the dynamics of an Iranian family (especially a couple, just like in Farhadi’s films) reflecting the ghosts and taboos of an entire country. Mazaheri, who has stood out in the short film and documentary formats, works with immense subtlety the psychological make-up of the characters, complex beings always moving in grey areas, here in the figure of a mysterious woman who suddenly takes one of the most important (and drastic) decisions in her life. Of this woman’s contained tour de force full of subtleties the viewer will never get clear explanations. Instead, he will be required to take part, to "enter" the film with the characters without fear of remaining with doubts. The final scenes, a kind of mise en abyme (a film within the film), are some of the best we will see at this edition of Curtas. (FN)
