A woman gets home and falls asleep. During her sleep, she sees herself getting back home and – tortured by loneliness and frustration – committing suicide on an impulse. The story then unfolds into a double climax, bringing together dream and reality. Through inventive editing, resorting to different camera angles and slow motion, mixing objective and subjective points of view, relentlessly repeating images of strong symbolic power – like a flower in the middle of a long road, a dropping key, an open door, a knife stuck on a piece of bread, a strange figuration of death with a mirror for a face or a telephone receiver off the hook –, Maya Deren gives us the vision of a world where it gets more and more difficult to differentiate phantasy from reality and with its circular, surrealistic and experimental plot shows us how an extreme emotional experience can be subconsciously triggered by an apparently banal and random event.
