Division is such a constant presence in this film that we could assume it is its main character. "31" needs risk, its tension lives off it and it always lives on the edge, not afraid to fall and managing the closeness to ridicule with the graceful movements of a tightrope walker. This is how, half cinema half life, half past half present, half hoodlum half preppy, it brings all those dimensions into dialogue, under the curious light of adolescence. The naturalness with which the film flows is not a whole one, it is an almost-naturalness - it also has one foot in artifice, as underlined (among other things) by the evocation of silent films, the references to the "Wizard of Oz" or the exoticism of the soundtrack. But the image I retained after watching it, I remember it well, was of a watercourse, a rivulet, with me sat on the edge biting a straw. Not that I think I’m an ass; simply because "31" manages to restore us our desire for serene discovery, somewhere between escapism and the immersion in nature. (Marcos Cruz)
