Diane Obomsawin (included for the first time in the competition of Curtas Vila do Conde) has been, since the mid-80s, a crucial name in the comic-strip underground scene in Canada. She began making animation films with the National Film Board of Canada in the last years of the 20th century. She successfully adapted to screen her simple, minimalistic but very seductive style, whose peculiar trace are the realist stories of everyday life told by anthropomorphic characters with animal heads. "I Like Girls" is an abridged adaptation of her book "On Loving Women" in which several women narrate the moment they found out they were homosexual as an important part in the definition of their own identity. As these stories are based on interviews to other women, the author’s identification with the stories told here is clear, would autobiography not be a feature of an important part of her work. The real stories of these women, told with a sense of humour inherent in Obomsawin’s work, are intimate revelations about the intensity and excitement of the first loves. (MD)
