Spanish cinema has consistently sought to build an imagery of the violent economic crisis that crashed upon Southern European countries in recent years. "The Disinherited" is a delicate, tender example of that culture shock: Laura Ferrés accompanies her father, Pere Ferrés, in the final path of his family business of tourist buses. This end is not only economically disastrous: there is a kind of subtle shame in Pere Ferrés, in his fifty-three years of age, in the frustration at a life with ups and downs that has, in this film, a sad close. All that is left for Ferrés are the night trips with drunk boys who humiliate him on their way back from parties. However, there is a kind of final dignity, sustained by a very dim line that makes Ferrés be able to go through the decline of his business and his way of life. In the background, sounds emitted by the television or the radio signal with more media impact this economic turn: banks are saved but people are not. "The Disinherited" is the second short of Laura Ferrés, who this year makes her first appearance at Curtas Vila do Conde. (DR)
